No matter how smart your website design is, if it is hard to reach the content of your site then your site is as useful as an empty shell. Here are some tips to improve the usability of your website to insure it serves its functions optimally.
The first method is to make certain the typography of your content is suitable. If you have large blocks of text, insure to use CSS to space out the lines accordingly. The longer a single line of text is, the greater the line-height of each line should be. In addition, make certain the font size of your text is great enough to read simply. Some sites have 10-pixel-tall text in Verdana font; while that may look neat and tidy, you have to essentially strain your eyes to read the actual text.
Make it simple for visitors to find content that they want on your site. If you have thousands of articles on your site and a sure visitor wishes to find one single article from that pile, you have to grant a feasible means to enable visitors to do that without hassle. Be it an SQL-driven database search engine or just a glossary or index of articles that you have, providing such a feature will insure your visitors can utilize your site with ease.
Insure that your site loads fast if you don’t want to lose visitors. Most internet users will leave a website if it does not load totally within 15 seconds, so ensure the best of your website is delivered to the visitors as soon as feasible to maintain their attention.
Last of all, test each and every link on your site before it goes online. There is nothing more effective in tarnishing your professional image than broken links, so be very cautious in regards to that.

Hi Bernard and thank you for your comment! You are absolutely correct. The article though is really based on things that you should do before your readers ever see your blog or website.
If you have a friend or family member that is willing to take the time to review your blog or website for you then you will have a head start over some of us
Of course some things are learned by trial and error, especially if you are just starting out.
In my opinion the best way to improve your blog’s usability is to do user testing. Find people who would be interested in what you talk about on your blog and ask them to spend 20 minutes navigating through it. Get them to think out loud and stress what they find frustrating or what they hate. I usually thank them with a gift card or maybe you can even just give them a link! The best source for usability is your users.
Hi Colette and thank you for your comment and pointing out this problem.
I am sorry to say that the problem is caused by an application I recently started using called Zemanta. I use Firefox exclusively and sometimes I forget to test new plugins and applications in IE and Safari. The same thing happens in Firefox except not near as bad as in IE. Everything is still readable in Firefox.
Unfortunately I have no idea how to change it except to either stop using Zemanta or find another theme.
Bare with me and I will work on this. Thanks again for pointing it out!
Some good points here.
Just a small tip – when I hovered my mouse over the text to follow a link, in IE7/XP Pro, I got a grey background appearing under the lighter grey text and there didn’t seem to be enough contrast for me to read it easily – other than that, a good read. thanks.
