Backlinks And Their Impact On Search Engine Optimization

The key objective of any web site should be to attract visitors and before you build your web site you should have an understanding of how you are going to attract visitors. Regardless of whether you are creating web pages for business, as a hobby or to inform, there will inevitably come a time when you are going to want to get people to come to your web pages. You want the majority of visitors to come from search engines. The most economical and focused traffic is delivered by the search engines.

Search engines make their living from delivering relevant and useful results to their users. Searchers will return over and over again to a search engine that delivers the most relevant results. The more frequently users return to the search engine the more opportunity and income the search engines create. The challenges are exactly the same for you and your website. Position yourself in the mind of your users as a relevant source of information and make them visit over and over again.

Backlinks

So what should you do? There are two methods that you can use. You can submit high quality content to the web or you can use advertising often called Pay Per Click (PPC) or in the case of Google ‘Adwords’.

Search engines see nothing but keywords or key phrases, everything else on the Internet is invisible. Search engines perform searches based upon the keyword or key phrase entered by the user. The search engine scans its index of web pages and returns the web pages it has decided are most relevant to the keyword or key phrase.

Search engines decide what web pages are returned by using two prime factors – authority and relevance. Relevance means the page contains the keywords and authority means the page has backlinks to it from other web pages. The profile in terms of authority and the volume of backlinks are used by the search engines in deciding the position or ranking of a web page in the list of search results.

Back links are the number one priority you should focus on in web page optimization. Back links play two important roles, they direct traffic to your web site and factor in the search engines deciding the position of your web pages in the index of results.

Users will follow links they find in content if the backlink is labeled with relevant text. ‘Anchor text’ is the correct term to describe the text appearing as a link and contributes to the value given to the link by the search engines.

Some back links have more value than others. Back links from pages with authority in the eyes of the search engine can pass authority onto your web pages. Significantly, authoritative web pages can pass some of their authority through the back links to your page.
