If there is one thing that all of us want from the Internet, it’s a plenty of traffic to our websites. It really doesn’t matter if we have a commercial website that is making us millions of dollars per year or if it is a personal website where we’re just trying to have a voice, getting additional traffic is always going to be something that is important.
Another important thing that needs to be considered when you’re trying to get this traffic are the key words that need to be used in order to have it pulled into your website. If you choose the right keywords, you will be able to receive a ton of traffic as a result and the opposite is also true. Make sure that you aren’t simply choosing keywords at random because you will be unhappy with the traffic to receive.
Before you do anything else, you need to begin compiling a list of these key words in separate text files. The way to find these keywords is by looking on the Google external keyword tool, as it is made freely available for Webmasters by the search engine Google. You can plug in a few seed key words and it will populate a list within just a few seconds that you can save to a text file in order to examine and come back to later.
From that list, you will probably be able to come up with a number of different synonyms that you had not considered before. Add these to the tool that is provided by Google and rerun your searches. Knowing this, you will have a more expanded keyword list that you will be able to use on your website. You may be able to find words that you had never even considered before.
Now that you have all of these keywords separated into list, you need to figure out approximately how much traffic they are going to be able to send to you. Make sure that you sort this list by that amount of traffic so that you can see the ones that are going to net you the most. After that, you need to begin searching for each of these keywords to find the competition, either using the tool or are doing so by hand.
After you have identified the best keywords, you should do a little bit of competition searching on Google in order to find out which ones are going to do the best for you when you use them on your website. What I do, is to search for each of the phrases using quotes in Google in order to find out the websites which are optimized for that particular term. This can help me to cut the list down to a sizable amount of phrases.
Finally, you need to take the best keyword phrases that you have found and use them on your website. You should also begin getting links back into your website that also use these keywords as the anchor text. In doing so, you will not only rank for these keywords but you will also rank for other keywords that you had never even consider before because of your link popularity.
